Alabama Road Laws

Size limitations: Height, 13'6"; Width, 8'6"; trailer length, 40'; motorhome length, 45'; combined length 65'. Triple towing is not allowed.

Alaska Road Laws

All children under the age of four, regardless of weight, must ride in a federally approved child safety seat while traveling.

Arizona Road Laws

Size limitations: Height, 13'6"; Width, 8' (8'6" on certain federal road systems); Trailer Length, 40'; Motorhome length, 45'; Combined length, 65'. Triple towing is allowed only with a fifth wheel trailer.

Required Equipment: Breakaway switch required on trailers over 3,000 pounds and brakes required on gross weight vehicles of 3,000 pounds.

Passengers are allowed to ride in fifth wheel, travel trailer and pickup camper.

Overnight parking is permitted but prohibited where posted.

Arkansas Road Laws

Size Limitations: Height, 13'6"; Width, 8'6"; Trailer Length, 43'6", Motorhome Length, 45'; Combined Length, 65'. Triple towing is allowed.

Required Equipment: Safety chain, breakaway switch required on trailers over 3,000 pounds, flares or reflective signs. Brakes required on trailers with gross weight of 1,500 pounds. Wipers/lights on when required.

Passenger riding in towed RV or within truck camper is not permitted.

Overnight parking is permitted in state rest areas.

California Road Law

Size Limitations: Height, 14'; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, 40'; Motorhome length, 45' but some exceptions and restrictions may apply see http://www.dot.ca.gov; Combined length, 65'.

Required Equipment: Safety chain, breakaway switch, fire extinguisher in RV, flares or reflective signs, brakes required on trailers with gross weight over 1,500 pounds.

Triple towing is not allowed. Passengers may ride in fifth wheel with audible or visual device with tow vehicle and safety glass and at least one exit can be opened from the outside and the inside. Passengers can not ride in travel trailer. Passenger may ride in pickup camper provided passenger can communicate with drive and exit can be opened from both interior and exterior, or safety glass in window required. Seat belts are required.

Overnight parking in state rest areas is "as posted".

Towing travel trailers may not be allowed in snow areas. Contact the highway patrol before entering a snow area; chains may be required at any time. Trailers may be barred due to high winds, blowing sand, etc. Trailers over 20' may experience difficulty in negotiating hair pin turns on California State Highway 89.

Colorado Road Laws

Size Limitations: 13'6"; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, not stated; Motorhome length, 45'; Combined length, 60', on designated rural interstates some exceptions, trailer limted to 48' in a 60' combination. Triple towing is not permitted.

Illinois Road Laws

Size limitations: Height, 13'6"; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, 45'; Motorhome length, 45; Combined length, 60'.

Required Equipment: Safety chain on designated rural interstates, some exceptions; breakaway switch required on trucks over 3700 kgs; flares or reflective signs; brakes on trailers over 3,000 pounds (gross weight). Lights/wipers must be on when conditons warrant.

Triple towing is allowed if does not exceed maximum combined length of 60' and only with fifth wheels and certain qualifications.

Passengers may ride in pickup camper only. Overnight parking in state rest areas is not allowed.

Trailers are not permitted on boulevards in and around Chicago.

Indiana Road Laws

Kansas Road Laws

Size Limitations: Height, 14'; Width 8'6"; Trailer length, not stated; Motorhome length, 45'; Combined length, 65'. Triple towing is allowed if it does not exceed the combined length of 70'.

Required Equipment: Safety chain, breakaway switch, fire extinguisher suggested but not required for inside of RV, flares or reflective signs, brakes required that stops the combined vehicles within 40 feet at 20 mph. If triple towing and connected by tow bars, anti-sway mechanism is required on the first connection and the second towed vehicle must be equipped with brakes on the wheels of at least one axle. If at least one connection is by fifth wheel or saddle mount, no requirement for anti-sway or brakes on rear vehicle. Braking for two-vehicle combination applies.

Riding is permitted in fifth wheels, travel trailers and pickup campers by passengers fourteen years and older only.

Kentucky Road Laws

LP Gas is prohibited on I-95 tunnels of Baltimore Harbor and Fort McHenry. Alternate route for RVs with propane is over the Francis Scott Key Bridge on I-695.

Massachusetts Road Laws

Texas Road Laws

LP Gas is restricted on the Washburn Tunnel between Pasadena and Galena Park on the Houston Ship Channel. Maximum of two 7 1/2 gallon containers (30 pounds gas each) or one 10-gallon container (40 pounds of gas) of DOT (ICC) approved type, with shutoff valve at discharge opening. Valve must be closed when in tunnel. LP gas as vehicle fuel is prohibited.

Utah Road Laws

Virginia Road Laws

Size Limitations: Height, 13'6"; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, 45'; Motorhome length, 45'; Combined length, 65'. Triple towing is not allowed.

Required Equipment: Safety chain, breakaway switch required on trailers 3,000 pounds and over, brakes required on trailer with unladen weight of 3,000 pounds. Wipers/Lights on when conditions require.

Riding is permitted in pickup camper only. Overnight parking in state rest areas is "as posted".

RVs equipped with ICC-approved LP tanks, not exceeding two 45-pound capacity tanks (or two permanently mounted containers with a maximum total capacity of 200 pounds) may cross the Viriginia/Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel provided that, in the opinion of the toll collector or police officer after inspection, the tanks are completely shut off and securely attached.

Vermont Road Laws

Size limitations: Height, 13'6"; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, 46'; Motorhome length, 46'; Combined length, 68'.

Triple towing is not allowed. Passengers may ride in truck camper only.

Overnight parking in state rest areas is not permitted.

Washington Road Laws

Size Limitations: Height, 14'; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, none stated; Motorhome length, 46'; Combined length, 75'. Triple towing is not allowed.

Required Equipment: Safety chain, fire extinguisher in RV, flares or reflective signs, brakes on trailers of 3,000 pounds, breakaway switch required on trailers over 3,000 pounds.

Passengers may ride in truck campers only. Overnight parking is permited in state rest areas not to exceed eight hours.

Wisconsin Road Laws

Size Limitations: Height, 13'6"; Width, 8'6"; Motorhome length, 40' (legislation pending to increase this); Trailer length, 48'; Combined length, 60' on selected highways, special permit. Triple towing is with special permit and not to exceed maximum combined length of 60 foot on certain highways.

Required Equipment: Safety chain, brakes on trailer with gross weight of 3,000 pounds.

Riding is permitted in fifth wheels trailers but there are some exceptions or restrictions. Riding is permited without restriction in pickup campers. Overnight parking in state rest areas is not allowed.

West Virginia Road Laws

Size Limitations: Height, 13'6"; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, 40'; Motorhome length, 45'; Combined length, 65'. Triple towing is not allowed.

Required Equipment: Safety chain, breakaway switch, flares or reflective signs, wipers/lights on when conditions warrant, brakes required on trailers over 3,000 pounds gross weight or weight of trailer exceeds 40% of tow-vehicle weight. Wipers/lights on when conditions warrant.

Riding is permitted in fifth wheels and pickup campers. Overnight parking is not permitted in state rest areas.

Wyoming Road Laws

Size Limitations: Height, 14'; Width, 8'6"; Trailer length, 45'; Motorhome length, 60'; Combined length, 85'. Triple towing is allowed but not to exceed 85' combined length.

Required Equipment: Safety chain, must be able to stop in 40 feet at 20 mph.

Riding is permitted in pickup camper only. Overnight parking is "as posted" in state rest areas.
